  • Exhaust-like odor fills the cabin during acceleration and fades after a few minutes; owner worries about possible carbon monoxide exposure. · filed Jul 2022

When accelerating, an odor becomes prominent throughout the cabin of the vehicle. I can only describe the smell as exhaust. This smell usually goes away, or is too faint to notice after a few minutes. If this is exhaust, isn't there a possibility of Carbon Monoxide poisoning? At first, I thought the smell came from some kind of cleaner that the dealer had used when cleaning, but now over a year later, the smell still happens. Only after investigating this smell on the internet, I found that this appears to be a prominent issue with this vehicle.

Is 1,782 complaints a lot? They were filed between 2014 and 2026, roughly 150 a year, which is more than the typical model in this dataset. We do not have sales figures for this model, so treat this as a rough volume, not a rate per car on the road. Popular, high-volume models naturally collect more complaints over time.

How does it compare with other years? The 2015 has 1,782 complaints on file, more than the 2014 (1,676) and fewer than the 2016 (2,448). Of the 17 model years of the Ford Explorer we cover, the 2016 has the most (2,448). Older model years have had longer to collect complaints.
