  • Transmission slipped out of gear and lost power between gears, lost reverse, and was hard to stop, causing several near-collisions. · filed Jun 2025
    Read the owner's complaint

On June 10th 2025 the engine light came on in my 2014 Ford Focus and I lost transmission function. The car was slipping out of gear, completely losing power and speed between first & second gear and third & fourth gear. I pulled into traffic before realizing the issue and almost got hit by two oncoming vehicles - one locked up their brakes to avoid hitting me, the other swerved into another lane which thankfully was empty. Slowing down was difficult, it was very hard to stop and I lost reverse gear. The overall driving experience was very rough and jerky. Driving 3 miles home I almost got rear ended two times due to loss of power between first & second gear. Driving 6 miles to the Ford dealership I almost got rear ended 1 time & 1 time I could not completely stop until I was halfway into a busy intersection. I had no ability to backup and traffic was completely blocked in one direction until I was able to safely cross the other 3 lanes of the intersection on a red light!! Prior to this incident & since I bought the car with 12,000 miles in 2020, it ALWAYS had rough transitions between gears & sputtering/brief loss of power when accelerating from stopped. I formerly had a 2013 Ford Focus which had these same issues so I figured that’s just how these cars drive with the Powershift dual clutch transmission. I had no idea that I should have been extremely concerned about the hard shifts & sputtering. I never received a single Customer Satisfaction Program letter from Ford about the clutch, leaking seals, or TCM warranty extensions and issues. If I had I would have brought my car in for service a long time ago. I am disappointed & dismayed that a recall has not been forced by the NHTSA. Ford has gotten away with putting unsafe vehicles on the road with little to no accountability. I, and dozens of others, could have been killed or severely injured while I was on the road in this unsafe car.

  • Transmission shifts roughly with check engine light; owner says dealer refused TCM replacement under extended warranty and blamed the clutch. · filed Jul 2025
    Read the owner's complaint

In 2018/2017 I became aware of the extended ford warranty on the TCM for a period of Fords in which my vehicle fit under. It was difficult discussing this issue with ford in getting it in to be replaced under warranty but eventually I was able to get it in for a diagnosis and appointment. Meanwhile, the whole time my car has maintained shifting roughly even though it had gotten the supposed replacement - and the vehicle was sold to me this way from Hayes Chrysler in Lawrenceville, GA. ]About a month and a half ago, my car shifts rougher than usual and my check engine light comes on, I make an appointment with Ford since there is another extended warranty covering the TCM but the dealership fails to replace it and states that it needs a new clutch - when in fact it is reading a code unrelated to the clutch (P07A5).

My card was recalled several years ago for a Purge Valve Canister. It was repaired but would still cut out sometimes. It is doing it again now, as a matter of fact when you pull up to a light or sudden stop it will stall the engine. Also when you fill up with gas, it does not want to start. I know that when it was fixed, the problem was a band aid fix. There is something in the vehicle causing this Purge Valve canister to malfunction. My son had the car and it had to sit waiting on a part for 2 years. It almost caused him to wreck on several occasions. In the meantime transmission shop check and didn't agree with the dealer. Finally the dealer replaced the TCM transmission control module. I ending buying the car to help my son. Less than 10,000 miles car began doing same thing. In the meantime I received a letter from the Factory extending the warranty. I had take to shop and same thing was the Transmission Control Module. It was causing the clutch and actuators. The shops said it a dealer issue and explained the letter and customer agreement to me. They said the dealer has to fix for free. I called the dealer and they diagnosed it over the phone and refused to fix without 4,700 hundred dollars. I still waited until appointment time over a month had it towed there was driven on to rollback. Was not told of a diagnostic fee. They later called me saying the drove and put on the computer and wasnt the TCM. Also told me it was gonna be 6,500 dollars. This car has anost caused 4 collisions one of which scared me so bad am having a brain injury I arrived it home a few minutes away and had a severe brain issues. The dealer on drove the car one tenth of a mile from the shop to a storage lot. They have repeatedly refused to give me the diagnostic print out but instead just an estimate. This is a well know issue with these transmissions to the point ford extended the warranty. I had to pay a fee and car was taken to a local garage where it remains. Car was driven on the rollback for travel tested at shop. Once again is TCM which is covered as many times a needed up to 150,000 miles. Once over 150,000 miles one more complementary TCM replacement. Dealer still refuses to fix according to Ford customer agreement also refused to just give me the TCM to have replaced. Factory complaint went no where. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Transmission control module causes power loss, shudder and sudden neutral on the freeway; owner says recall parts have been backordered over a year. · filed Dec 2023
    Read the owner's complaint

There is a recall on this car for TCM transmission module. This part is available through non-dealer car repair shops, however, Ford has been unable or unwilling to provide this part for recall for over 1 year, saying that it is back ordered with no date of arrival estimated. I received my recall letter in August of 2023. I was in dealer and had this part tested on September 18th, confirming the recall applied to it. The dealer had my car for one month before returning it to me still broken. Today they still have no estimate on when they will fix this. This issue causes my car to lose power and shudder and the engine light comes on when starting off from being stopped, or sometimes just suddenly act like it has gone into neutral on the freeway. Ford apparently only has to replace this on vehicles with less than 150,000 miles that are under 10 years of age. My car is a 2014, so in one month it will be 10 years old, and only a few months after that it will reach 150,000 miles. It seems like Ford is trying to wait out this recall so they do not have to pay for the repair. It is unreasonable that there are obviously suppliers for this part but Ford is not willing to contract with them and make the repair, meanwhile those of us who spent tens of thousands of dollars on Ford vehicles have to take our lives in our hands every day just to drive the garbage they wont fix. Please make Ford do more to help those affected by this recall and please don't allow corporations to time out their responsibility to fix the low quality garbage they produce. I have received no indication that Ford will ever fix my car. Ford Motor Company said they have a loner program that goes through the dealer, but the dealer says they know nothing about any such program. It's a lot of games being played and very few cars being fixed. Thank you.

Is 2,601 complaints a lot? They were filed between 2013 and 2026, roughly 200 a year, which is more than the typical model in this dataset. We do not have sales figures for this model, so treat this as a rough volume, not a rate per car on the road. Popular, high-volume models naturally collect more complaints over time.

How does it compare with other years? The 2014 has 2,601 complaints on file, more than the 2013 (2,110) and more than the 2015 (1,018). Of the 9 model years of the Ford Focus we cover, the 2012 has the most (3,768). Older model years have had longer to collect complaints.
