Car Defect Radar
Built from NHTSA complaints and recalls collected for this model, generated September 22, 2026. Totals reflect what has been collected, not every complaint ever filed.

Recalls

0 total

Safety issues the manufacturer must repair for free. A recall means confirm the fix was done, not walk away.

No recalls on record for this model

No safety recalls were found in this dataset. It is still worth entering the exact VIN on NHTSA before purchase, since recalls can be added at any time.

What happened: On XXX at approximately 6:49 PM, shortly after departing, the vehicle displayed error and warning messages, entered neutral, and would not engage Drive or Regenerative Brake mode. The vehicle remained inoperable in this condition for approximately one hour near the intersection at approximately [XXX] , during rush hour traffic. The vehicle recovered without mechanical intervention. This is the third occurrence of this failure mode within approximately 90 days. Safety risk: Loss of propulsion at or near a major intersection during rush hour traffic created a severe collision risk to vehicle occupants and surrounding motorists. The vehicle was unable to move under its own power for approximately one hour in high-density traffic conditions. Dealer/manufacturer confirmation: The vehicle was brought to Deel Volkswagen, Miami, FL on XXX and is currently under active diagnostic evaluation. This is the third reported occurrence of the same failure mode. A related drive error was previously documented at a XXX dealer service visit. Other inspections: UNKNOWN. Prior warning lamps or symptoms: Error and warning messages appeared on the vehicle display immediately prior to loss of drive mode. Identical failure modes were previously documented on 02/23/2026 and 05/11/2026. The vehicle has a history of repeated software campaigns and recalls including 97HB, 919A, 57J5, and 57J9 suggesting a pattern of unresolved electrical and software nonconformities. PRIMARY SAFETY DEFECT — SUDDEN STOP IN ACTIVE TRAFFIC: The vehicle suffers from severe, uncommanded electrical/drive-system shutdowns. While driving in live traffic, the ID.4 panics, flashes error alerts on the display, and abruptly stops within seconds. This sudden, violent stopping in active lanes creates an extreme safety hazard, leaving the EV dead in traffic with no warning and creating an immediate, severe risk of high-speed rear-end collisions, loss of control, and serious occupant injury. SECONDARY SAFETY DEFECT — ELECTRICAL & CHARGING SYSTEM FAILURE: Immediately upon picking up the EV post-warranty service on Aug 31, 2026, the dash displayed persistent error messages: "Your Charging Socket is not working." A VW Master Tech/Engineer at the dealership evaluated the vehicle, witnessed the failure, and explicitly warned that driving long distances poses a severe risk of complete vehicle disablement and becoming stranded on public roads due to total charging failure.REPAIR HISTORY & DAYS OUT OF SERVICE (OOS): The safety issues first occurred around Feb 2025 (towed to dealer). Since then, I returned the EV to the authorized dealer (Jim Ellis VW Kennesaw) at least 5 separate times for the same unresolved flaws. The vehicle has been OOS for warranty repairs for over 90 cumulative days, including 60 continuous days during the last visit. Dealer diagnostic logs confirm central control unit (CCU) replacements and extensive electrical repairs, yet the hazardous conditions remain uncorrected. MANUFACTURER RESPONSE: VW Group of America acknowledged this history under cases 07530936, 07526164, 07386099, 07334984, and 07709898. VW offered a 4.5k cash settlement, which I rejected as insufficient to address the extreme safety risks. VW has since refused a repurchase, ended negotiations, and closed the case without resolving the defect. This EV is dangerous and unroadworthy. My family and I have lost all confidence in this car.

Subject: Request for Investigation and Recall – Door Handle Failure on Volkswagen Vehicle Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am writing to formally request an investigation and potential recall concerning a serious safety issue with my 2022 ID.4 AWD Pro S Volkswagen vehicle. The problem involves the door handles failing to open from either the inside or outside of the vehicle. I can provide video evidence showing that, while the vehicle is fully unlocked, with no child safety mechanisms engaged and my foot on the brake at a complete stop, the doors cannot be opened from either the front or rear seats. This issue occurs repeatedly—approximately four to five times per week—and has become more frequent since the “919” recall was performed on the vehicle. Despite this, the dealership has stated that the issue is a “non-issue,” claiming that other vehicles of the same model exhibit similar behavior. The inability to open a vehicle door in normal operating conditions is a serious safety concern that could endanger occupants in an emergency situation. Volkswagen’s response minimizes a clear risk to consumer safety. If the software controlling door operation cannot be relied upon to perform such a critical function, it should be removed or replaced with a mechanical mechanism that guarantees the ability to open the door at all times. I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether a recall or corrective action is warranted. Thank you for your attention to this important safety concern. Please let me know if additional documentation or video evidence would be helpful to your investigation. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S AWD [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

THEI VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN 2022 AND SO FOR EITHER THE DEALERSHIP OR THE VW DID NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE. I AM NOT ABLE TO LEASE MY VEHICLE UNDER TURO OR ANY OTHER ONLINE CAR RENTING PROGRAMS. I WAS TOLD THE PARTS WERE BACK ORDERED BUT ALL THE RESALE VEHICLES AT DEALERSHIP ARE ALREADY FIXED FOR THIS RECALL ISSUE.

Is 135 complaints a lot? They were filed between 2022 and 2026, roughly 33 a year, which is more than the typical model in this dataset. We do not have sales figures for this model, so treat this as a rough volume, not a rate per car on the road. Popular, high-volume models naturally collect more complaints over time.
