  • The transmission control module lost its programming again, locking the car into neutral while driving, causing power surges and disabling the emergency brake. · filed Oct 2025
    Read the owner's complaint

Last year in 2024 our vehicle started having significant issues with the transmission. We took it to a dealership and through our warranty that we purchased, we were told that the transmission control module had lost its programming but no one understood why. It wasn't covered under our warranty and we paid full price out of pocket for that. Less than a year later we are back with the same issues again where it's not holding on to its programming. It locks itself into neutral when we are driving, it will have surges of power with the battery, and no longer has any emergency braking system. We cannot put the emergency brake on in fact. We lost all of our 4x4 variations such as snow sport and four wheel drive low. Full drive is no longer able to be engaged at all with the transmission. It will not shift in or out of 5th gear which means every time we push on the gas that means it's going to be starting out in 5th gear which is obviously a strain on the transmission. Due to that it has no towing power whatsoever right now. It has shut off completely in the middle of us driving bfore. These issues are causing it to slowly lose it's communication with all of the other modules in the vehicle and the engine itself is no longer communicating with the transmission which makes driving the vehicle almost impossible.

  • The transmission repeatedly drops into neutral at any speed and won't re-engage, and the dealer offered to replace it only at the owner's expense. · filed Dec 2024
    Read the owner's complaint

While driving, the transmission goes into neutral. This happens at any speed. It won't go into gear at all. The local Jeep dealer said they could replace my transmission that I pay for. There was an initial lawsuit on these. But, any owner after the first one doesn't get help. I am disabled and on a limited income. I am stuck at home because I never know when the vehicle will go into neutral. I don't know what to do. This has happened every time I drive it. I have had to risk it to drive to the doctor and to get my prescriptions. If I can get it off of the road, I cut it off. It usually goes back into gear. But, when it goes into neutral, my complex PTSD and my anxiety disorder goes into overdrive. I feel absolutely hopeless about this. I would appreciate any help I can receive.

  • The transmission jolts and shifts harshly, randomly loses 4WD availability, and has a 1-3 second lag between pressing the gas and acceleration. · filed Dec 2023
    Read the owner's complaint

The vehicle will not shift into 4-low. Randomly says 4 wheel drive is unavailable. Abnormally hard jolts and shifts. The transmission does not shift correctly and makes it very uncomfortable to drive. The lag response time from pressing the gas pedal to the moment of acceleration is between 1-3 seconds. Car not downshifting or using 2nd gear at all due to software reflash is robbing part of the functionality of the vehicle. Off-road select trac modes programmed gear shift points render using the modes completely useless and wastes unnecessary fuel.

MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED A USED 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE LIMITED 4 CYLINDER FOR OUR DAUGHTER IN 2017. WE NOTICED EARLY ON THAT IT HAD SHIFTING PROBLEMS WITH ITS GEARS. IT WOULD SORT OF JERK AND LUNGE FORWARD WHEN SHIFTING GEARS. WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM A CARMAX IN NORTH CAROLINA. WE ALSO PURCHASED THE MAXCARE EXTENDED WARRANTY, GOOD FOR 60 MONTHS AND 100,000 MILES. THE CAR HAD 38,000 MILES WHEN WE PURCHASED IT. WE HAD IT A FEW WEEKS BEFORE RETURNING IT TO CARMAX COMPLAINING ABOUT THE JERKING. CARMAX SAID THEY TRIED A FEW THINGS, BUT ULTIMATELY SAID IT COULDN'T BE FIXED; THAT IT WAS JUST A "JEEP THING." AND ADVISED US TO TAKE IT TO A JEEP DEALER IF OUR PROBLEMS PERSISTED. THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES DID PERSIST. IT IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM EVERY DAY. IT JERKS, LUNGES, DOESN'T ACCELERATE PROPERLY OR SHIFT GEARS PROPERLY, AND FEELS UNSAFE. THE JERKING HAPPENS ON CITY STREETS MOSTLY, ALTHOUGH IT JERKS ALMOST ANY OTHER TIME AS WELL. IT WILL EVEN LUNGE FORWARD AFTER COMING TO A STOP LIKE AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR EXAMPLE. A JEEP DEALER IN 2019 PERFORMED A SOFTWARE UPDATE TO THE POWER TRAIN MODULE SAYING JEEP WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS, BUT THE SOFTWARE UPDATE WOULD FIX IT. THE UPDATE HAD NO AFFECT ON THE CAR. NO IMPROVEMENT WAS OBSERVED. THE CAR IS SCHEDULED TO RETURN TO THE SHOP FOR THE SAME ISSUE TOMORROW. MY DAUGHTER FEELS UNSAFE IN THIS CAR.

My parking gage engaged several times while parked I saw that it said the parking breaking was engaged but I had not put it on. Next it engaged when stopped for a traffic light. I was able to restart it several times. Noticed that this was most likely to happen after a rainfall. Last time it happened my son was able to trick it into disengaging and get it home. Next day it had to be flatbed towed to my mechanic. He changed the parking break switch and that burned out again. After careful investigation he found over two gallons of water under the spare tire where the parking break module is housed. It had to be replaced as well as both calipers. The module also had to be reprogrammed. It was at there 22 days. The mechanic bill was nearly $1,800. Now I need extensive body work to perhaps stop the water coming in thru the seams underneath the power-lift door which had opened. In checking previous complaints it seems that This should have been a recall long ago as it has happened to other similar jeeps.

This time Jeep Service Technician said that because of this code U0402, the car needed a change of transmission, and it cost $11000. Receipt dated 06/06/2025, I took my car to DMV Pre-certified Technician, and he also told me the car needed a change of transmission, cost $11,232 6-I complained to Megee because Jeep technician knew about this problem with code U0402 since 2018, when the car was under warranty, and they told me not to worry about it, and now Jeep has the responsibility of changing the transmission for free. 7-I contacted Jeep Customer Care (877-426-5337) complaint #[XXX]. Representative told me that the problem had to be resolved directly with Megee Motor (Georgetown, Delaware), because it was its problem. 8-Megee Supervisor Tom Hecks told us that he needed authorization from Jeep Customer Care to change the transmission of the Cherokee. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE 2 YEARS AGO FEB. 2017. I BEGAN HAVING TRANSMISSION ISSUES WITHIN THE FIRST 10 MONTHS. BECAUSE IT WAS A CERTIFIED PRE-OWED VEHICLE WITH A 1 YEAR GUARANTEE THEY FIXED IT BY DOING A NEW VALVE BODY AND UPDATE. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AFTER THE 1 YEAR GUARANTEE BUT I HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT COVERED IT AND THEY REPLACED THE VALVE BODY AGAIN. IT DID WELL FOR ALMOST A YEAR AND THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME THEY SAID IT WAS A WIRING HARNESS ISSUE NOT THE VALVE BODY AND REPLACED IT. NOT 3 MONTHS HAVE GONE MY ENTIRE DRIVESHAFT BASICALLY SEIZED UP AND THIS TIME THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE DRIVE SHAFT. THIS WAS ALL COVERED UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. WHEN I WENT TO PICK UP THE CAR I DROVE IT AWAY AND IT BEGAN TO MAKE A POPPING NOISE . I TOOK IT BACK THEY COULD NOT FIND IT AND SENT ME AWAY. 3 MONTHS LATER I FINALLY CALLED PLANET HONDA WHERE I PURCHASE THE VEHICLE AND ASKED IF I COULD GET IT IN AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. THEY RAN MY VIN AND SAID THERE IS AN OPEN RECALL WITH NO SOLUTION.....THEY DID TELL ME TO BRING IT IN AND THEY WOULD SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO. I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED. I HAVE HAD MY JEEP IN THE SHOP 5 TIMES FOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES IN JUST OVER 2 YEARS....I AM SO EXCITED CONCERNED THAT THIS IS GOING TO CONTINUE AND SOON MY WARRANTY WILL RUN OUT AND THEN WHAT WILL I DO!?!?! NOT TO MENTION THE FRUSTRATION OF HAVING TO FIND RIDES TO WORK WHILE THEY FIGURE OUT WHAT IT IS AND IF ITS COVERED BY MY WARRANTY AND THEN WORRYING THAT THEY WILL NOT HONOR OR FIX IT WITHIN THE TIME MY RENTAL IS GOOD. I CANT EVEN PUT INTO WORDS MY FRUSTRATION..... THE FIRST 3 TIME A MY VEHICLE MALFUNCTIONED IT WAS STATIONARY. THE 4TH TIME IT WAS IN MOTION AND I ALMOST WRECKED MY CAR. CURRENTLY IM DRIVING IT WITH THE POPPING NOISE COMING FROM MY TRANSMISSION BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE ANY ALTERNATIVE... *TR*JB

IT THEN DIED AND THE SYMBOL OF FAULT POPPED UP ON THE SCREED. IT STATED THAT THERE WAS WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION. NOW THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START. Is 2,645 complaints a lot? They were filed between 2014 and 2026, roughly 209 a year, which is more than the typical model in this dataset. We do not have sales figures for this model, so treat this as a rough volume, not a rate per car on the road. Popular, high-volume models naturally collect more complaints over time.

How does it compare with other years? The 2014 has 2,645 complaints on file, more than the 2015 (1,786). That is the most of the 9 model years of the Jeep Cherokee we cover. Older model years have had longer to collect complaints.
